There is a tiny cherub with a strawberry on his head sitting on our counter right now, and people cannot stop picking him up. That is Sonny Angel. If you have wandered past a desk, a phone case or a sunny windowsill lately, chances are you have already met one. The full range has just landed in store, so here is where he came from and what we have on the shelf.

Where it all began

Sonny Angel was born on 15 May 2004 in Tokyo. His creator, Toru Soeya of Dreams Inc., set out to make a small, comforting companion for grown-ups having a rough day. The design borrows from the old Kewpie dolls, all soft cheeks and wide eyes, finished off with a bit of headgear you do not get to pick. That last part is the whole hook. Sonny Angel comes in a blind box, so you never know which one you are getting until you open it. More than 1,300 versions exist now, sold in over 33 countries. Not bad for a desk-sized angel.

The standard series

The classic standing figures are where most collectors start. They rotate through themes, and the Animal series is the one that kicked it all off and keeps coming back for more. We have Animal versions one through four in stock, alongside the Flower series for anyone who would rather a bloom on the head than a bunny. There are food-themed runs too, and right now we have the Snack and Sweets series in, which are every bit as fun as they sound.

Hippers: the 2021 twist

In 2021, Sonny Angel did something clever. The Hippers series arrived, swapping the standing pose for a little angel that sits and clings to things. A reusable sticky pad on the base lets him perch on your laptop, your drink bottle or the edge of a shelf. The first Hippers theme was Animals, and the line has only grown since.

Cherry Blossom and the 20th birthday

Our pick of this round is the Hippers Cherry Blossom series, a soft pink and green spring release that flies out the door every time it drops. It lands at a lovely moment too, because 2024 marked Sonny Angel's 20th birthday. Twenty years of one small angel quietly making people smile, and the sakura colourway feels like the perfect way to mark it.
